Team Descriptions

Horse Team
The horse is a mounted unit that assists on searches in areas where appropriate.

Requirements:

  • The Horse Team member must be able to control his horse in a safe manner.
  • Trail horses need to cross creeks and bridges often found in our county and travel mountain trails in a safe controlled manner.
  • 24 hour packs for search need to be made up and available for immediate use for unexpected call outs. Actual pack contents are based on your experience and needs.
  • Team members need to be in good physical condition to be able to search the rugged country of our county on horseback.
  • Team members should have good GPS and map reading skills, and should know how to use a two way radio repeater.
  • Team members must attend horse training sessions as required by the team leader. Team members must be willing to train with the team and participate in certification activities with their horses.
  • First aid knowledge is recommended.

Dog Team
The dog team consists of search dogs, their handlers and appropriate support personnel

Requirements:

  • Members must be in good physical condition. Everyone should be capable of walking several miles in one day on a typical back country trail.
  • Members must be able to use and understand a GPS, two way radio and radio repeater.
  • Members must be prepared to carry enough food for one day on their person and pack enough food and gear in their vehicle for an overnight stay.
  • Members who intend to use their dogs for searches must be willing to train with the team frequently and participate in certification activities with their dogs.

Dive Team
The dive team carries out searches for victims and items as required by the Sheriff

Requirements:

  • Divers must be certified.
  • Divers must attend dive team training sessions as required by the team leader.
  • Dive assistants must attend training sessions.
  • Divers and assistants must be in good physical condition.

Snowmobile Team
The snowmobile team assists with searches when snow conditions dictate their use

Requirements:

  • Team members must have equipment in good mechanical condition and a means to transport same to the search area.
  • Team members must carry enough personal equipment and food to spend all day and possible overnight in the search area.
  • Team members must carry appropriate safety equipment

ATV Team
The ATV team assists with searches when conditions dictate their use

Requirements:

  • Team members must have equipment in good mechanical condition and a means to transport same to the search area.
  • Team members must carry enough personal equipment and food to spend all day and possibly overnight in the search area.
  • Team members must carry appropriate safety equipment

Foot Search Team
The foot search team assists with searches when conditions dictate their use

Requirements:

  • Team members must be in good physical condition to be able to search the rugged country of our county on foot.
  • Team members must have available for immediate use a search pack containing necessary personal, food and safety items to search all day and possibly stay out overnight.
  • Team members should have good GPS and map reading skills

Security Team
The security team assists the Sheriff’s Dept with various law enforcement activities including event security, traffic control, assist with securing personnel and scenes

Requirements:

  • Maximum of 20 members.
  • Member must have uniform furnished by SAR.
  • OC training recommended

Certified Drivers
Any driver to drive county owned vehicle must complete driver safety course given by the county.

Mapping Team
The mapping team is comprised of members trained in the use of the SAR laptop computer and a topographical map program to produce maps necessary for the efficient planning of a search and to document areas searched by inputting tracks to the map from searcher's GPS units.
